We have plans to take my mother to London for her 80th birthday this April. She uses a small motorized scooter that my sister and I can lift and my mother can manage short walks and a few steps. Can anyone tell me if the Healthrow Express is handicapped accessible? Also interested in taking the train that many have referenced, from Paddington to Windsor and wonder about the transfer at Slough. Also, anyone who has traveled with someone who is disabled and can share any 'tips', that would be most appreciated. Thanks
Cathy
I've not traveled with someone disabled but I work for a British railway company so can perhaps help. Heathrow Express has a very comprehensive access statement at their access policy Unfortunately about a third of the way down it says Mobility scooters are not allowed
onboard our trains as they cannot be secured for the journey. Its a shame because so much of the rest is so well written. Many railways in the UK will allow scooters, on mine they are allowed if not too heavy, the rolling stock accommodates them and they are no larger than 100cm x 150cm. If it were me I'd call the number on the front of the document, remember we are 5 or 6 hours ahead. Good Luck..
Not having had to travel with somebody with mobility issues, I am afraid i havent paid too much attention. But as i recall the trip to/from Windsor you stay on the same platform at Slough without changing. At Windsor there is a long gradient from town down to the station. But i dont remember any stairs. Paddington railway platforms are all at one level- except the Underground is at a different level
Hi Brian and Nigel Thanks for your feedback. I did notice the comment on the Heathrow express site that scooters are not allowed after I had posted my question.
Cathy
If you plan carefully, there are some direct trains from Paddington to Windsor and back. I do know that sometimes we have had to change platforms at Slough and had to climb some stairs to cross over the tracks .
