Is it feasible to drive from Inverness to the Isle of Skye, look around a bit, and make it to Oban in one day? If so, what can be viewed in a couple of hours? I would like to stop at the Eilan Donan Castle. I have routed from Inverness down A82 to Invergarry and west on A87. Is A887 a possible alternative short-cut, or is this not a good road? Also, what is the best route back to Fort William?
I've driven portions of this route and I don't think you can do this in one day. At least not and see anything. These aren't wee roads, but none of them are super highways either. It will take you nearly 2 hours to get to Kyle of Lochalsh and you aren't even on Skye. It's another hour to Portree the main town. Then an hour back out. It's another 3 hours straight driving to Oban. That is 7 hours, but you haven't let any time for sight seeing, eating, picture taking, or factoring in sheep on the road. I don't think it would be a fun trip. I think that you'll need to make some choices. I've spent a fair bit of time in Scotland and driving or being driven around the highlands the west. So, if you want to PM me, with specific questions please do.

Skye is absolutely fabulous. If you try to do this all in one day, you will not really see it. You need at least a day on Skye to get see the most beautiful places. I would suggest staying there overnight or it's not really worth it.
Thanks to everyone who replied. I didn't think that we could do this in one day and will go with the original plan of driving from Inverness down to Oban. I'll just have to visit the Isle of Skye another trip.
Super. Now that you have time to see some sights on the way, I would like to recommend that you visit Urquhart Castle on Loch Ness. Also, just north of Spean Bridge near Fort William is the Commando Memorial from WWII. It's a great little stop. It's about 15 minutes with marvelous views and a lovely place to reflect on the role these men played in WWII. Just outside of Fort William is Glen Nevis. You can drive in and a have a short walk. It's very nice and some film scenes were don here. I think it was Brave Heart, but it may have been Rob Roy. The rest of the drive to Oban is quite beautiful. Pam
