Travel Insurance for Tour

We have booked a 14 day "Rick Steve's Tour" to Ireland in September - cost of the tour for both of us is 7884.00. I purchsed trip insurance when I booked our DL tickets (maybe should have waited and rolled all into one?) and now would like to purchase trip insurance to cover the trip in the event that we have an emergency and can't make the trip. We have had to cancel two trips in the last three years due to death in the Family) Also, is our medical insurance that we already have through our company benefits NOT sufficient? I have seen several suggestions for Travel Insurance companies- 'Travel Guard", 'insuremytrip" and "Squaremouth" . Has anyone compared these to share which one has the best options or offer an even better suggestion? I need to book within the next few days as I booked our tour on May 20th. THANKS to anyone who can offer advise.

Sorry, I am drawing a blank - what are DL tickets? You can compare travel insurance policies with a variety of coverages, on insuremytrip.com or squaremouth.com. Those are sites where you can look at the details of many companies and pick insurance that only covers what you want without paying for coverage you don't need. Travel Guard is an individual company. Your employer's insurance is probably enough health insurance (as long as you are sure that they cover you while abroad), but you might want a policy that covers med evac or repatriation.

@Nancy: I think Sheila is probably referring to airline tickets on Delta. Sheila, Can you increase the amount of the trip insurance you bought when you booked the tickets? That's what I would do to avoid having to keep track of two different insurance policies. As far as your company medical insurance you would have to ask them. You would probably at least want the insurance that gets you back to the US after a medical emergency. My insurance is good about reimbursing for out of area medical treatment, but wouldn't cover air transport from a foreign country to the US.

I'm lost on why you would want extra insurance for the RS tour. It's my understanding that trip cancellation is included in the trip's cost. You can reschedule but not get a refund. If you cancel or leave a trip for a covered reason there is a partial refund. See the fine print for your tour. RS does recommend that additional travel insurance be purchased. If you bought the insurance through Delta (or any airline) it may only cover the cost of your airfare. We frequently get a minimal travel policy for medical and medical evacuation. My health insurance ends at the US border so this is a little bit of peace of mind. We have used it for one trip we cancelled and it covered the non-refunded airline cost and some B&B cancellation fees. Typically, we pay around $100 for $2000 in trip cancellation that also includes the medical. The whole trip may have a "sticker price" of $7500 but much of this is not totally lost. Look at what you may have at risk.
