Travel from Paris to London via the chunnel.

What is the best plan to get from Paris to London via a train that goes direct and under the channel? How long does it take? What should we expect it will cost? How far in advance can we purchase a reservation?

The Eurostar goes from Paris to London in less than 2 1/2 hours. There is an allotted number of discount fare tickets for each departure date and time. The longer you wait, the higher the fare. To get the lowest fare ($52.50 US), book ASAP (up to 120 days in advance) at www.eurostar.com. Print your own tickets. Discount fare tickets are for a specific departure date and time and are non-exchangeable and non-refundable so be sure you can commit before booking.

Go to www.eurostar.com for info and ticket sales. Tix go on sale several months (I think it is 4 months) in advance. The earlier you buy, the better the rates. Last time I looked the cheapest seats were $59 for April 2012. Those are non-refundable. More flexible tix are available for more money. The train ride is something less than 2 1/2 hours, and travels from Paris Gare du Nord (train station) and goes to London St. Pancras station.

Just to keep the terms straight it is the Eurostar. Ask for the chunnel you might get some strange looks in Europe. For some reason some American tourists like to use that term, not sure why. Chunnel referred to the hole in the ground and was somewhat of a negative term used when it was being built. You might want to read the discussion under Eurostar to France just below at the moment.

The Eurostar train between London and Paris was really inexpensive and efficient when we took it last year. We booked our tickets online via their website, and paid roughly $53 per person.
