Travel from London Heathrow Airport to Portsmouth

We want to get as quickly as possible (but not by air) from London Heathrow to the town of Portsmouth. We will fly in on British Airways from Phoenix AZ. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

National Express has coach (highway bus) service from Heathrow to Portsmouth at least once/hour. Some coaches go directly to Portsmouth, but for some departure times you have to connect in London.

Decades ago my sister and I took the train from London Tao Portsmouth. That said a quick google search on Heathrow Portsmouth brought up some great buses. These seem to exist because of the cruise ships that depart from Southhampton. Check it out. It sounds much better than the train into London. Pam

The National Express Buses run every 90-120 minutes. Its worth noting that the luggage allowance on National Express is 'European', no bag (max 2) should be heavier than 20kg (44 lbs) - less than the baggage allowance on most flights from the US. The alternative is to go by train, but not going into Central London. There is a RailAir bus shuttle that goes between Heathrow and Woking Station where you pick up the trains out of London to Portsmouth that run about every 20 mins. Luggage on the trains is only limited to the amount you can physically carry. There are 2 train stations in Portsmouth. If you want the Isle of Wight ferry you go to Portsmouth Harbour, Portsmouth Station is in the city centre.
If you are caching a ferry to France or Channel Islands or getting a cruise the National Express bus drops you at the front door of the ferry/cruise terminal, the trains do not.

Go to www.aquacars.co.uk. We booked with them a couple years ago. They met us at Heathrow right outside customs and took us directly to our Portsmouth B&B for less cost than two train tickets. No hassle with a bus or then a taxi. They were great and even came early since we had changed to an earlier flight from Dallas. We enjoyed the naval history of Portsmouth and then took the ferry over to France. You might also go to www.tripadvisor.com, type in the Portsmouth forum, and get all sorts of great tips on Portsmouth.
