None of the car rental companies will allow me to drive from Ireland into Northern Ireland. Can someone tell me the best way for a family of four to get from the Sligo area to Portsmouth (near the Giant's Causeway)? Any help would be great...starting to stress the little stuff.

Are you absolutely certain about that? I got my rental and did all of Ireland and N. Ireland. Was never told I couldn't leave Ireland to go into N. Ireland.

Two car companies have told me that. It may be because I want to drop the car off in Belfast (we are flying to Scotland).

Yes, that would make a difference. You're then renting in one country and dropping off in another. Did you try any Irish companies? Dan Dooley lets you drop off at many places in Northern Ireland (Belfast airport and Belfast docks, among others). I don't know how they would compare to the quote you have now, but it might solve your problem.

We recently hired a car from Hertz in Dublin and dropped it off at the Belfast Domestic Airport. No problems whatsoever.
