What is the most economical way to get from Heathrow Airport to central London and about what are the costs.
We would like to help. Central London, like central Manhattan, is actually a large area. It will help us give a better answer if you can be a little more specific about your destination within central London.
I'm going to Talfargal Square area.
The least expensive option is probably taking the Underground, also known as the Tube. The Piccadilly tube line runs straight from Heathrow to Leicester Square in about an hour for £4.50 (about $7), and then you can walk into Trafalgar Square in about 5 minutes. Here's a useful trip planner for the Tube and other mass transit in and around London: http://journeyplanner.tfl.gov.uk. Wherever you want to go in London, just pop in your starting and ending point and see what it says. So handy!
I will post a link that gives information once the board problems are fixed. Until then, it will be impossible to post. If you do not want to wait, go to heathrowairport.com and near the top of the page will be a tab that says to and from the airport. Then click on the link that says to and from London.
Glad I am not the only one who noticed the board problems. Meanwhile... The Tube is the cheapest way to get from Heathrow into London. The fewer bags you carry the better. It is a subway designed to haul people, not people and suitcases. The train will also become crowded as it approaches central London. Traversing the interior of Tube stations often involves a surprising amount of walking. More expensive but arguably more convenient options are trains, the Heathrow Express and the Heathrow Connect, that run to Paddington Station in London. From there, you would take a cab to your destination or use the Tube. Paddington is also a Tube station. Some people hire a car and driver to meet them at the airport. This is even more expensive but very convenient. Grabbing a taxi is almost certainly the most expensive. Information about the Tube, buses, and local trains in and around London is at the Transport for London site. Google that and it will be the first listing. Click the Getting Around link on the top menu and you will see a link about getting To and From London. If you are going to be in London for some time and using the Tube, buses, or trains, and you almost certainly will, the Transport for London site is a good one to explore. BTW, trains, buses and Tubes do not run 24/7. They shut down late at night. Bear that in mind if your arrival at Heathrow will be late in the evening. The last Tube run from Heathrow leaves around 11:30 pm.
You can get to Trafalgar Square much more easily by taking the Piccadilly Line to Hammersmith and taking the District Line from there to Embankment. The change at Hammersmith should be just crossing the same platform and Embankment is quite close to the surface. When you leave Embankment, walk up Villiers Street and you'll be at the Trafalgar Square end of the Strand. Getting off the Piccadilly at Leicester Square is farther to walk and will involve coming up the second longest escalator on the Tube.
Hi, If you are just interested in getting into London by the cheapest way, then it is taking the Tube. But there is no place for luggage. Take the Heathrow Express...it is 18 GBP one way, buy a return ticket and the total price is 32 GBP. The Express goes directly to Paddington, the terminous, and takes 20 mins. Yes, it is more expensive but definitely worth it in terms of comfort and placing the luggage...I know. When I took the Tube from LHR with my 2 pieces of luggage, luckily no one else with luggage boarded.
Luggage is just fine on the tube. That's why the tube stops at Heathrow. We've used it to get to Kings Cross station with our luggage. Just fine. The Paddington Express is great. We've used that as well. However, for Trafalgar Square, you will need to take either the taxi or more tube trains to get there from Paddington. But, you have to change tube stations if you come in from Heathrow on the Picadilly line also. Note that on the tube, there are lots and lots of stairs. There are elevators in many stations to assist but there are lots of stairs.
The Heathrow Express to Paddington at £16.50 plus the tube at £1.80 to Trafalgar Square will take about 45 minutes. The entire journey by tube costs £4.50 and takes about one hour. Saving 15 minutes with the Heathrow Express costs you £13.80 more, the equivalent of £55.20 per hour. Heathrow is the start of the Piccadilly tube line. There will be room for your luggage on what will be nearly empty carriages. Assuming you are reasonably fit, can carry your luggage up a couple of flights of stairs or for 100 yards, you will have no trouble with the tube. The direct route from Heathrow to Leicester Square may suit you for a hotel "near Trafalgar Square". Knowing your hotel's address would allow us to give you more exact advice. If you will be using more public transportation you may want to consider a travelcard or Oyster card instead of paying £4.50 for a single journey from Heathrow. Also, check of tube line closings, especially on weekends. Click on "service [INVALID]s" from the TFL home page. http://www.tfl.gov.uk/
