Transportation from Gatwick to London Victoria

I am landing in Gatwick Airport on Friday, February 15, 2013 at 8 AM. I noticed that there are several trains from Gatwick going to London (National Express, Gatwick Express, Easybus and First Captial Connect). Does anyone have any suggestions of how to get to London that is uncomplicated, rather inexpensive and fast? Has anyone ever used any of these train services recently? Does taking a taxi cab make any sense? This is my first time in London but I am a seasoned traveller. Many thanks!

A taxi is going to cost you over $100USD, and can easily get caught up in traffic. If you final destination needs to be Victoria station instead some of the other stations around London like Kings Cross/St Pancras, then your best option is the Gatwick Express. It's a non-stop 30 minute journey with frequent departures. There is also a commuter train which does the route but takes twice as long, and about ten dollars cheaper.

I am afraid that some of the information in the prior reply is incorrect. Possibly because it doesn't have the word chunnel in it. The quickest train from Gatwick to Victoria is the Gatwick Express. Most of their trains make no stops and the journey is 30 minutes end to end, and at peak times they go every 15 minutes - at slow times it is twice an hour. They are the most expensive rail option. The Southern Trains do not take twice as long. There is a very frequent service of fast, much less expensive, Southern Trains which go to and from the same stations either making no stops, one stop at either East Croydon or Clapham Junction, or both, and take from 32 minutes to 35 minutes for the journey. National Express is a coach line which goes to Victoria Coach Station a distance from Victoria Station and can get caught in traffic. Easybus is a minibus or small bus painted bright orange. I don't know where their stops are. First Capital Connect is a local train service with many stops which doesn't go near Victoria but is convenient to connect to Kings Cross St Pancras for the Eurostar which goes through the Channel Tunnel to France and Belgium. I could get you much more specific information for what to do when you get to Victoria if I knew your final destination.

"...The Southern Trains do not take twice as long..." They can indeed take twice as long. While there are lots of Southern trains that take just about ten minutes longer than the Gatwick Express, there are other Southern trains which do the route in just under an hour. I learned that lesson the hard way trying to save a few bucks. Since this is your first visit to London Lori, I recommend you take the Gatwick Express, it will be the most stress-free way to get to central London.

Many Thanks for all your information and the quick replies! I will book the Gatwick Express online today.
Nigel: I am staying at 51 Buckingham Gate, Taj Suites and Residences. I got a great deal through Expedia - I am paying 1/3 of the regular rate for my entire stay! The hotel is within walking distance of the London Victoria station so it is easy to get around.

Your Taj is about half a mile walk, about 10 minutes. It is nearly as close to St James Park station when you get yourself situated.
