I read all the Helpline suggestions, but never see anything regarding good train travel in Ireland....? Is it non-existent? Bus/coach travel...How do those of you who have utilized same in Ireland feel about coach travel in scenic areas? Suzanne
Train travel is limited in Ireland and getting from point A to point B often requires backtracking via Dublin. Coaches cover more territory and are cheaper. I used a rental car in Ireland so I have no personal experience sightseeing by coach.
We took train from Dublin to Cork then took bus to Kinsale. Both were very nice.
Train allows you to get up and move around (and use the toilet when necessary). It is faster and better if it goes where you want.
Buses run more often, are cheaper and go more places. However, sardines are sardines so you sit.
I'd go by train where it is direct and convenient and use buses elsewhere so if the train goes there or near there and doesn't backtrack through Dublin, go for it then use the bus for the rest of the way.
Note that sometimes the bus and train stations are not co-located so you might have to walk or take taxi depending on distance.
