Has anyone taken a train from Dublin west to either Limerick, Cork or Galway? What did you think? We will eventually rent a car but I have fond (distant) memories of train travel in Europe as a teenager and want to travel that way again.
We took the train from Galway to Dublin last month. It was nice and relaxing. We spent 4 days driving around the west coast and then were going to Dublin for St Patrick's day. Decided it would be easiest to return the car in Galway and take the train to Dublin.
Train made 5 or 6 stops on the route.
If you buy your ticket in advance online you save money, we bought a couple days before online and it was 15euro each for one way. I think max is 25euro each way if you book online, you can choose which time, and price can vary by time, and you also can reserve your seat free.
Theres a current offer for overseas vistors above 65 years of a free 4 day pass.I'll try and find link

There's also a new rail line linking Limerick and Galway! Just read about it on the Irish Fireside website.
