Train - London to Edinburgh?

I am looking for advise on buying one way rail tickets for four adults from London to Endinburgh on May 30th, 2012. We are staying at the Luna Simone Hotel near the Victoria Tube Station and check out on the morning of the 30th. Which train station would make the most sense to depart from for Edinburgh?

In 1st Class the cars are usually less crowded and therefore more room to store luggage, seats are more comfortable/spacious, and drinks and food are usually gratis.

1st class usually gets you more room (usually 3 seats across) versus standard class (usually 4 seats across). Some of the trains even include other extras in 1st class like free wifi or a meal. What extras you get depend on the train operator. You might want to check the East Coast website to see what they offer. There should be a section describing first class amenities. That being said, I nearly always travel 2nd class (aka standard) and find it perfectly comfortable. I typically buy a sandwich and drink in the station and take it with me.

Agree Kings Cross, an easy journey on the Victoria Underground line, just a quick 5 stops. Using the 3 minute rule of thumb it should take 15 minutes(ish) to get there.

Thank you both. At the website and am offered L66.00 for four "Std Class Advance Single". Departure at 9:00 am and arrival at 13:25. Does this sound "correct"? Also, is there a better side of the train to sit on?

Sounds reasonable. You didn't specify which "website". I would use National Rail Enquiries and double check on Eastcoast.co.uk who are the gang providing the train and look for specials. I'd sit on the right so that I had a view of the North Sea as you go north... It may depend if you want sun in your eyes. A morning train will have sun on the right (east) side.

I am getting a price quote of L66 from "Eastcoast" and L74 from "NationalRail".
I believe that we are on the east side. Many Thanks!

Marty, I'm getting £74.20 (purchased from East Coast) for 4 adult tickets at the time you mentioned. BTW, are you sure you want to take the train that early? Remember you'll be taking the tube during rush hour with your luggage to get to Kings Cross; and your tickets will only be good on that particular train, so you can't miss it. You might want to consider the 11:00 train for the same price. That will give you plenty of time for breakfast, checking out of your hotel, getting to Kings Cross station and collecting your tickets, and even picking up a snack for the 4 hour trip. I've made the same trip a number of times, and I prefer facing towards the front of the train on the right side. Of course we're usually going 1st class on long trips, so we hop back and forth depending on what we're passing.

Thanks. I am having an issue getting the credit card accepted and will try in an hour, as suggested by Visa. (not sure why?!?).

What is the difference between standard and 1st class?

We'll be doing the opposite of Marty taking the train from Edinburgh to London. This thread has me thinking. Where DO you store your luggage on the train??? Kristen

There are overhead racks for carry-on sized bags, and larger racks at the front (or end) of each car for larger bags. Also you can squeeze some bags between seats backs in 1st Class.

I'm not sure your age and physical condition, but my 60+ husband with bad knees was not a happy camper in 2nd class on this trip. We usually travel 2nd class on French trains but he was much more cramped on the U.K. 2nd class.

Have a great trip. And when you're on the Royal Mile, stop in The World's End Pub (4 High Street) and have a pint for me!!

We will be taking the train from London to Edinburgh as well. We have a stop in Newcastle to visit family for dinner, so wanted to leave fairly early in the day. One post mentioned the rush hour. When is the rush hour over in London? We might want to wait a bit before we rush out.

Cindy, The Underground charges Peak prices on fares until 9:30am Monday to Friday, off peak at other times.
