train-heathrow to edinburgh

Hello-Flying SFO to London in September. Not loving the connections to Edinburgh, and am considering a train. Is there a stationat Heathrow-any great advice? Then will rent a car in Edinburgh. Thank you, LInda

There is not a National Railway Station at Heathrow. But you can take the Piccadilly line on the tube from Heathrow directly to Kings Cross, and then take the train to Edinburgh. On one of our trips we arrived at Heathrow, and because we had BritRail Flex passes to cover our train trips we caught the Heathrow Express to Paddington, took a cab to Kings Cross (didn't want to deal with all the steps in tube stations with luggage), and caught a train to Edinburgh. It might seem like alot of travel time after the plane trip; but the 5 hour train ride (in 1st Class) was so comfortable and relaxing, it was a real pleasure to sit and enjoy the scenery. Of course a light lunch and tea on board didn't hurt either. Linda, are you spending any time in London either at the beginning or end of your trip? (I'm assuming you're flying back to SFO from Heathrow.)

I took the UndergroundPiccadilly Linestraight from Heathrow to King's Cross St. Pancreas. I honestly don't remember having to deal with too many stairs. I would have had a roll-aboard suitcase and a backpack. I caught a noon train to Inverness. That would be the one caution I would have, which is that you not make your connection too late. If you end up with an hour or two to burn, the British Library is within easy walking distance. I dropped my bags off at the left luggage and came back for them after visiting the museum. Pam

Thank you, Mary and Pam. We are not spending time in London on this trip, but have had the pleasure many times before. It is tempting! I appreciate the directions. Sounds like you two are very educated in the train area. Thanks!

It may be easier to take the Heathrow express or Connect from heathrow to paddington and then get a direct Tube line to Kings Cross. Or even take a taxi from Paddington to Kings Cross. The Piccadilly Line from heathrow to Kings Cross is easy- no changes
