Hello, We are a family of 6 interested in taking the train from York to London Waterloo station via Cambridge. We'd like to leave York around 8 or 9AM, get off in Cambridge and poke around for a few hours, then hop back on the train and continue on to London Waterloo station that evening. Can that be done on 1 ticket from York to London or do we have to buy a ticket from York to Cambridge and then a second ticket from Cambridge to London Waterloo? I can't seem to figure it out on the rail websites.
Thanks!
hi, There are no direct trains from York to Cambridge. From nationalrail.co.uk there is a train which departs at 0836, you change at Peterborough and get to Cambridge at 1108. From Cambridge to London the trains arrive at Kings Cross station. They seem to depart Cambridge at about half hour intervals and take about an hour to get to Kings Cross. From there you would need to get the Tube to Waterloo.
I think the train from York goes into Kings Cross- not Waterloo.
If memory serves, the Cambridge station is a 20-30 minute walk from the town center. Worth bearing in mind if you're only going to allot a few hours to the city. Might be a good time for a bus.
Walk up fares for longer distances in the UK are very expensive. If you can commit to specific departure dates and times and book 60-80 days in advance at www.nationalexpresseastcoast.com, you can get very cheap discount fares for York-Cambridge. (No advance purchase discount fares for Cambridge-London.)
A family group your size could also benefit from buying a Family & Friends Railcard. With the discounts given, walk up fares would be a lot more reasonable.
j.c.'s memory is correct. There is frequent bus service between the Cambridge train station and the city center.
