Train from Manchester Airport to Liverpool - should I buy advance tickets

Hi, Four of us will be traveling by train from Manchester Airport to Liverpool (City Centre, Lime Street Station) and I'm wondering if there is any benefit to buying tickets in advance or is it easy and cheap enough to do it on the day? It will be a Friday around noon. Many thanks for any input.

I would buy advanced tickets online to try to get the cheapest fare. You can collect the tickets at the station. Friday's can be busy depending on the the time of day. Go to nationalrail.co.uk to pick your journey and book tickets. You should not have a problem buying tickets on the day but the cost will probably be a lot more. I would recommend reserving a seat especially if it's a bank holiday weekend or there is a sporting event going on in Liverpool. I have been on that route a few times and the trains have been crowded.

Direct trains from Manchester Airport to Liverpool are operated by Northern Rail. Looking on their website reservations are not possible and there doesn't appear to be any advance-fare discount. By UK standards this is likely to be too short a journey for those to be available.

Thanks to you both. I will wait until we land and buy tickets then for the next available train. Andrea
