If I book my ToL tix online and elect to pick them at the Tower, is there a specific pick-up point? Or is it just any of the ticket counters? (Was kind of hoping that booking online would also provide some sort of line-skipping benefit.)

There is a spot indeed. Take the tube to the Tower Hill station, exit and head for the Tower. After crossing the busy Tower Hill
Terrace road you'll walk right onto a nicely paved gateway of sorts with a block of tickets windows on your right. Look for the window that says advanced ticket pick up. Only one entrance into the Tower though. Was there in May, purchased tickets 10 minutes before the gate opened and walked right in. Enjoy your visit.

We will be going to the Tower of London the end of August. I purchased my tickets online, and they mailed them to me at no charge.
