I am starting to plan a trip to Scotland with my family (4 adults and 2 kids) My sister and I are planning to return to the town our mother was from, Cowdenbeath, north west of Edinburgh. We are planning on spending about 10days touring around Scotland. What are some "have to's" and some "not really worth it" also any suggestions on transportation, should we rent a car or travel by train, with 6 people I am trying to contain costs where I can. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Oh and has anyone ever taken the ferry from Scotland (west coast) over to Belfast? Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

If you are there in August, you must plan on the Edinburgh Tattoo. Wonderful experience. Also try for one of the many Highland games and Folk music evenings all around Scotland. Steam train avross Scotland. A lot easier by car but will leave it for those who have done it by train.
