Top 5 Moderately priced hotels in London?

Hello. My husband and I will be in London in two weeks and stay for 4 days. We have read travel guides, etc. for suggested London hotels. We have never been to London and will do all the tourisy things. We'd like a moderately priced hotel in a great location close to the tubes and within walking distence to the sights. Suggestions, plese?

Michael's answer is the right one. Any hotel you pick will be close to some sights and consequently farther away from others. Depending on when you plan to go, $250 is probably fine. Hotels get a good deal cheaper in slack times, and a lot higher for New Year's, summer, etc. I have stayed at the Premier Inn Michael mentioned. It was fine, and the location was pretty good....although not quite as good as it seems from looking at maps. The hotel is on the back side of the building, facing away from the Thames, so don't expect to see Parliament from your hotel window. Two other hotels I have stayed in are near Paddington Station (where the Heathrow Express arrives): the Hotel Indigo and the Quality Crown-Paddington. Both were modern, the Indigo rather hyper-modern. The Paddington area is a little worn- looking, though not seedy or unsafe by any means. There are lots of places to eat, and Paddington is on multiple tube lines. There is also a new Holiday Inn next to the Russell Square tube stop. I have not stayed in that hotel, but have spent many weeks in the area (Bloomsbury) around Russell Square, which is in easy walking distance of King's Cross/St Pancras, Euston, and the British Museum. As long as your hotel is roughly on or inside the Circle Line (yellow) on the Tube map, you are in central London and will be just fine. Have a great trip!

London is a huge spread out city, there's no one area that's within walking distance to all or even most of the main attractions; the Tube will be your friend:) What is your price range what do you consider moderately priced? There are a lot of cheaper hotels near Euston Station like the Ibis, and Premier Travel Inn. There's another excellent Premier Inn at Country Hall. It's right next to the London Eye, across the bridge from Big Ben, short walk to Westminster Abbey, and Buckingham Palace.

Thank you. I'll look into those. I consider $250.00 USD to be moderately priced. Hopefully, I'm not off base!

Try Priceline. A post on betterbidding.com reports getting the 5* Athenaeum for $265 + $52 tax/fees during the 1st week of November. That's an excellent hotel in a fine location. No guarantee you would get that hotel or that price, of course, but it illustrates the possibilities in the Mayfair-Soho bid zone.

Just got back from London-stayed at the Ridgemount Hotel at Gower Street-near British Museum.Excellent location-close to several tube stations. Breakfast is included. We were ensuite-triple because we had our Granddaughter with us-and it was 99#.It is family owned and VERY clean. Plus it is a very safe neighborhood.Small rooms, no air conditioning but I expect these things in London. Have a great trip-we did !

I recently stayed at the Morgan Hotel, right around the corner from the British Museum. It's a small, family-run (dad and son) place. It was a reasonable walk to Leicester Square. Best of all, there was a bus stop right in front, so a short ride to just about anywhere in central London (though I never quite figured out the buses back - one-way street :-)

Laura, just returned from England. We spent the last 6 nights in London at the Rembrandt Hotel, across from the Victoria and Albert Museum and convenient to South Kensington tube station. Price for 5 night (we got the 6th night free), $1150. We booked through British Air when we made the flight reservations. Lovely hotel with a sumptuous full English breakfast buffet.

Thanks so much for these recent recommendations. I think I'll have this figured out soon.

Also, I'm curious if anyone recommends a particular side trip? We are debating a fifth night...possibly visiting Bath, Avon, etc. Anyone have an opinion on that? I may have to post another topic.

We have stayed several times at the Green Park Hilton, chosen for its central location. It is on Half Moon Street, half a block from Picadilly. From there we have walked to all of the main tourist attractions: Westminster Abbey, Victoria and Albert, all of the south bank from the London Eye to the Tower of London (that one is a bit far-maybe two miles?), British Museum, West End theatres, most of the parks, etc. There is a Pret on the corner for a reasonably priced breakfast and a Marks and Spencer Simply Food nearby where you can buy items for a room picnic.

Laura- regarding the side trips. Here is the webaddress of an article I wrote about day trips by train from London (http://www.aaacarolinas.com/Magazine/2008/Jan-Feb/britain.htm). You might find it helpful. If you want to spend the night, I think York would work very well. You could even consider taking the sleeper train to Edinburgh and returning on the same. Cardiff Wales is also a great trip. Bath is ok, but I find a day suffcient. Stratfod-upon-Avon is also a good day trip- or an overnight if you want to add a 1/2 day tour of the Cotswolds area.

We like to stay at the Victoria Thistle (now called the Gosovenor) inside Victoria Station. Very convinent for the Tube and good shopping and resturants. There are some smaller hotels in that area the others on this board have recommended before- including the Luna Simone and the Lime Tree.

By the way- you won't find any hotel in London within walking distance of All the sites as they are rather spread out. However, the Tube makes getting around very easy.

Feel free to private message me. We've been to London more than 40 times.

Not sure if I'm too late, but I booked my hotel through hotels.com at the Umi Hotel London. It had good reviews and looks centrally located. I can't give a complete thumbs up, since I leave in 2 weeks, but I can say I got quite a deal. For 5 nights mid-November for a twin bed was $441 total. Good luck and have fun!

I spent 8 nights at the City Inn Westminster last month. It's a nice modern hotel about a 10-minute walk south of Parliament. The price was around 120 pounds, which should fall within your limit.

London is a great place to bid on priceline.com! Definitely go for a 4 star in Mayfair or somewhere that looks good to you on their map. First, familiarize yourself with the process and bids that have been won on biddingfortravel.com I've had great luck!

I just booked two nights the first week in December at this small hotel down the street from the British Museum: http://www.hotelcavendish.com/index.htm Excellent room rates, I thought, and a very nice looking hotel. £75- per night, not bad for Russell Square vicinity. Found through eurobookings.com, a site I have used before and highly recommend for choice, good quality hotels, and low prices. I will NOT be using hotels.com again, since there are plenty of other sites. Hotels.com required 3 email contacts before responding to an online request for information about a reservation I made in Edinburgh last June, and then to actually get a full answer, I was forced to call them. I was not impressed, and have moved on and found other online resources. Bookings.com was a great resource (prompt, efficient, easy to use site) for a recent hotel found at a good price two blocks from the train station in Copenhagen on short notice, but in general, I find eurobookings.com has the lowest prices for good-quality budget (2-3 stars) small hotels.

Thanks to everyone who drew my attention to the OTHER pictures and info about Hotel Cavendish! I have cancelled that reservation, and have booked with a hotel mentioned on another part of this site, called Morgan's, in the same area. Great Trip Advisor reviews, a bump up in price, which is fine. I'd rather pay more and not have to deal with bed bugs and rooms the size of broom closets, thank you very much! However, I still recommend eurobookings. :-) They weren't at fault, and their prices are very good. I was foolish, jumped in when i saw the price (let this be a lesson to me!) and didn't do my research. Life is too short to stay in a dismal place, even if it's only for two nights.

We are booked next year at the Lime Tree Hotel and got what I think is a reasonable rate of L130. I've had good results emailing hotels I'm interested in, and I offer to pay cash for a lower rate.

we loved the Park Plaza at Victoria. It was 2 blocks from the Victoria tube station (we took the tube from Heathrow, as we were there on a weekend and it was not crowded-used the off-peak travel pass for 7.5 pounds for the day, unlimited transportation, including from Heathrow). We paid 100 pounds for a triple room. Very nice. Great location, but not noisy. Easy walk to Buckingham Palace. Easy hop on the city bus to Westminster, Big Ben, London Eye (or you could walk it in under 20 minutes). Right on the tube line to Tower of London. I got this hotel from a recommendation on this BB or travel book, etc. and I was very happy. Lovely staff.
