Tolls in Ireland

Hey all. I was planning our routes for our upcoming trip (in 9 days!) and we'll be on a toll road or two. I've read about some type of e-pass, but can you just pay regular cash like toll roads here? Seems less complicated...

The only toll road I can think of in Ireland is the Dublin ring road (M50). It has no toll booths, just readers and cameras. Go ahead and use it then look for a place with a sign like this in the window: http://www.payzone.ie/ All you're looking for is a sign like the logo in the top left corner of the link. Some gas stations, some grocery stores, most news stands and smoke shopts have them. So do some bars out in the country. You have until 8:00 pm the next day to pay (it's not much). It doubles the following day (still not much) and then zooms out of sight. March in with your tag number and tell them what you're about, nothing to it. First, however, check with your rental outfit - - many have it already taken care of.

Thanks. Yes, we'll be using the M - 50. Planning to ask at the rental counter about that one. But we'll also be on M-1, twice in one day. From the Airport to Bru na Boinne, then from Bru na Boinne to Dundalk, where we're spending the night.

My wife says I don't know what I'm talking about re the number of toll roads and that the M1 has booths, both coin-toss and attended.

Thanks, Ed's wife! :) That's what I was hoping to hear - attended booths.

OK J, here are the tolled roads in Ireland M50 – Only barrier-free toll, not sure what happens if the tourist doesn't pay? East Link – Over the Liffey in Dublin's docklands - €1.70, you shouldn't need to use this Dublin Port Tunnel - €10, don't need to use it and avoid it M1 – Between Junction 7 & Junction 10 - €1.80 M3 - Between Junction 5 & Junction 6 - €1.30, between Junction 9 & Junction 10 - €1.30 M4 - Between Junction 8 & Junction 10 - €2.70 M6 - Between Junction 15 & Junction 16 - €1.80 M7/M8 – Junctions around Portlaoise - €1.80 M8 - Between Junction 15 & Junction 17 - €1.80 M25 – Waterford bypass - €1.80
M18 – Limerick Tunnel (bypass) - €1.80 All except for the M50 are staffed with people who will provide change if needed, but all have unstaffed 'exact toll amount' booths as well. Hope this helps
