Thrifty Car Rental Rip off in Dublin

My son just came back from 2 weeks in Ireland. He prebooked and payed with "world credit card" for aprox 275 and now he has received the credit card bill for 800 dollars. Am I missing something?? All was fine when he picked up the car.Nothing was said concerning more money?? What the heck. This has me so ticked off.

Look at his receipt. Gas and super CDW will add a lot to the bill. If you didn't get super CDW, you'll be billed for any repairs at their discretion. If the receipt is different from the bill, I'd dispute the charge.

If your son didn't keep the receipt, you can dispute the charge and ask for an itemized bill from Thrifty. It puts you at their mercy then because it's pretty likely the new receipt will match the charge.

Good luck with this. Add ons and switches are pretty common in Ireland.

For what it's worth, I had a car earlier this year for 8 days in Ireland and it cost $600. That was an automatic with all the insurance. I filled my own gas tank at the airport or there would have been another $125 added on to the cost. Your son's $800 might not have been too bad. He may not have understood all the extras, etc.

Yes the car was prepaid in full and with using the "world card" the worries of the CDW was taken care of. I have traveled to Ireland a lot in my life and actually lived there for many years. This is not the first time I have heard this going on and actually my husband assisted a young American couple that where being charged a fortune. The car dealer was not pleased with my Rick and had to change the total for them.
There was no damage to the car and hopefully we will get this resolved quickly. Shame on Thrifty for this is a out and out scam and they should be ashamed of themselves. This will also be posted on Tripadvisor

We are leaving for Ireland on Thursday. I had read if you have a World Master Card, you do not have to take out CDW, but otherwise, with any other card you have to in Ireland. I read you still should show the rental place a letter from your credit card company saying they are covering you. Maybe the Thrifty counter agent wasn't aware your son was using a World Master Card? - and oversight? It might not be too late to bring it to their attention. I know in the USA we always have to initial and sign if we want CDW or decline it right at the rental counter. I wonder if they do that in Ireland? We don't have that card so are prepared that we will have to pay for CDW. My husband think it is a rip-off, but we don't have a choice. I am not sure if we should get the super CDW, but my husband does not think it is necessary.

Marie, we do have the World Card and I used it last year on my trip to Ireland and so did my son when he went to see family last year. There was no problems what so ever then so what happened.. That is why we got this credit card but we pay it off immediately because it has a high interest rate
We will look into it further and give you an update. We booked thru Auto europe for Italy and Ireland and the guy made a comment on our credit card and that it would save on the waiver.
