In August (16th) my wife and I will fly from Heathrow to Dublin; we'll spend three nights in Ireland before flying back to Heathrow and then home to Seattle. We'll spend the third night in Dublin (to catch an early flight to LHR). We'd like suggestions on places to spend the first two nights away from Dublin. Scenic beauty, music, history are priorities. We'd appreciate any suggestions.
I would suggest staying in Dublin the whole time. You don't want to travel too far or you will spend the bulk of two days in the car. Also, it will be more relaxing if you don't have to change hotels. For history -- really ancient history -- you could take a day trip up to New Grange and see the ancient burial mounds. You could also see some of the historic sights in Dublin such as Trinity College. For scenery, you could take a day trip down to Glendalough. I have not been there, but it sounds lovely. You should be able to find music in Dublin, though I can't help you there.
Spend a day on the hop on hop off bus which will allow you to cover Dublin. A day trip (organised tour)to Newgrange and Glendalough would round off your 3 days
You are going to be there such a short time you should consider just staying in Dublin, with maybe a day trip to somewhere nearby. If you decide to spend the whole time in Dublin, there is a 3 day deal you can get for 25 euros - round trip on the Airlink bus from the airport into town, a day on the hop on hop off bus, and unlimited use of the city buses. It sounds like you will be there the perfect amount of time to utilize this. We were there for 3 nights (2 full days). We did the HO/HO the first full day and noticed that they didn't really pay that much attention or really seem to care if people scanned their ticket. We decided to try to get on the HO/HO on day two and were able to use it again all day with no problem. We bought the tickets at a machine at the airport, located outside at the bus stop. Whatever you decide, have a great trip!
