Will be in Iceland for three full days (not including travel days) in early September. I know the weather might not be fantastic, but oh well! We haven't started our planning yet but I always love to hear what people's "must see" attractions are. We have a hotel in Rekjavik, and know we're going to the Blue Lagoon on our fourth day (the travel day) as it's part of our airfare package. Other than that, we're wide open. We like packing a lot into each day and seeing a mix of natural beauty as well as taking in cultural institutions/people watching, etc. Thanks in advance!
My wife and I were in Iceland three years ago in early September. One day we had nice weather, the rest was rainy, but we expected that! We did: Whale watching tour Blue Lagoon Reykjavik sightseeing
Thorsmark and the south coast I really enjoyed the day trip to Thorsmark since we got to see the beautiful Icelandic countryside, plus some nice waterfalls. The whale watching was a bust and we did not see any. In hindsight, I wish that we had done a day trip to do the "Golden Circle" which takes in the Geyser (geyser, the first one which all others are names after), Thingvellir (the ancient parliament spot), and the waterfall Gulfoss (huge and beautiful). PM me if you want more specifics on Reykjavik, etc.
I want to second the suggestion for the tour that includes Geysir and the waterfall. We spent 5 days in Iceland in January a few years ago. We did NO driving as the ice conditions were scary, but the bus tour of those three locations was just magnificent.
Hello, I am an Icelander, living in Florida. September can be very good for fine weather, its normally not very cold yet. And quite still. Its a must to see Thingvellir (þingvellir), where in the old days, was the parlament of Iceland. And see Gullfoss and Geysir, thats a popular tour, waterfall, and a natural geyser. Walking tours in the city are also popular, they are with a guide. If you have a change you can go to Akureyri, the capital of northern Iceland. Either by plane og bus. You will like the Blue Lagoon, its interesting. But watch not to put your hair in it, as it will take very long time to wash the sulfur out! I am from Reykjavik, myself, and of course I like to walk in the city. There are many other places to see in the country, and September is still a good month to travel. Enjoy the clean air and water in Iceland, and your stay there.

September should be ok. We went the beginning of March. Get to a normal public swimming pool... they have hot tubs and all the locals are asking one another how was your day, just like an English pub. Spoken English is really good. The food is fantastic, but very expensive. Pick a clear day if you can for the cathedral and the lift to the top for the view and the Perlan has an excellent museum about Icelandic history. Oh, and be gentle with the locals, they are having trouble adjusting to the fact tourists can afford to visit and they can't afford their own museums. (A complete generalisation, of course.)
