The Open Championship

We are debating whether or not to rent a car on our trip to London & Edinburgh. I know the train system is great between those two cities, but we are also taking in the Open at Royal Lythum & St. Anne's. We will be staying in the Liverpool area. Does anyone know how it easy it is to get to the Open by train? or is it more convenient to rent the car?

I think the golf course is closer to Blackpool than it is to Liverpool. We drove a car along this route but I'm sure you'll get a post from someone who's more knowledgable of the transit options. Enjoy the Open!
