The North Yorkshire Moors Railway

I had planned on spending the better part of two days and two nights in York, but would like to experience the Yorkshire Moors. Since I am not planning on using a car for this part of my journey, I thought a unique way I could see the moors would be to take the North Yorkshire steam engine train from nearby Pickering through Grosmont, ending at Whitby. However, this would mean returning to York for a third night and taking a day away from my next destination which is Edinburgh. Originally, I had planned to spend 3-plus days and 4 nights there. Has anyone done this train excursion before? Would it be worth taking an Edinburgh day to do it?

If your three days are strictly Edinburgh, I would take a day away to see Yorkshire Moors (but definitely need a car)- cant comment on the train

Yes, the NYMR as such runs from Pickering to Grosmont but there are now a few through trains to Whitby on certain days in the summer. Do check the website for exact dates and times.

If you are a fan of steam railways, it is definitely worth a day. I rode from Pickering to Whitby in June 2009. It was a direct train going to Whitby, I had to change in Grosmont on the way back. I know that from Whitby, there are connections to Middlesbrough, and that might be a spot where you could go on to Edinburgh. On a previous trip (2007) we stayed in Goathland, and caught the train to Whitby.

If I remember correctly Pickering has a church where Little John of Robin Hood fame is supposed to be buried. interesting little church- if you do the railway, take the time to visit the church

Brian,
What a great piece of information. Legend or not, I am a big fan of the Robin Hood and will try to get to that church in Pickering. Certainly another reason to make the effort. Thanks, Michelle
