Has anyone traveled to Hay-on-Wye (book capital) and the Hereford, Leominster area by the England/Welsh border? If yes, do you have highlights from the area you could suggest? Thanks.
I would recommend Stokesay Castle in Shropshire. This is more a fortified manor house than a castle and is very interesting. I had a British Heritage card and there were several places to visit in that area such as Croft Castle and Berrington Hall. Stokesay is older than the other two and more bare, whilst the other two are more like stately homes.
Well if you're going to Hay you absolutely HAVE to visit Richard Booth's shop. He's one of the last great English ecentrics - possibly genius. He's the king of books and the man who made Hay the mecca it has become today.
Also visit the cinema that has been turned into a paperback bookshop. There's nowhere else like it.
In fact Hay is the highlight if you have even a passing interest in books.
