I want to stay about 4 nights in the area - doing day trips to Glastonbury & Tintagel, Bath, Stratford and some stone circles. Leaving then to go north to Glasgow....Any hotel/B&B ideas about a good central location?
Kimberly - I would recommend Moreton-in-Marsh. If I remember correctly it is off the A44 which is a major road in the area. From MIM you can also do day trip to Blenhiem(sp?) Palace and Warwick Castle. As a side note will you have a car?
Thanks, I'll check places to stay around there - and yes, we'll have a car.
The only real reason to use Moreton as a home base is if you don't have a car--it has the only train station for some distance. With a car, I think you would find much more charming towns within a 15 minute drive of Moreton as a home base. Check out RS England for more info (one example is Stow-on-the-Wold). Have a great trip!
Kimberely - Gio is correct, Since you have a car I would recommend Stow, Chipping Campden, Bourton-on-the-Water, or Stroud. Check out smoothhound.co.uk for places to stay in the Gloucestershire area.
Absolutely Chipping Campden!!! It's picturesque and has wonderful eateries. If you are opting to stay in a BnB, I highly recommend The Chance. Very hospitable inn keepers. Other lovely towns in the area are: Stow-on-the-Wold, Broadway, Moreton-in-Marsh, Northleach, Snowshill (cute little stop), Cirencester (in between Bath and Chipping Campden).
I hope this helps.
If you want a more central location, you need to stay in the southern Cotswolds; Cirencester or a bit farther south. Tintagel is really too far for a day trip from the Cotswolds (at least 3½ hours / 200 miles from Chipping Campden). I'd suggest you spend 2 nights in 2 locations to reduce your driving; Bath would be good for Glastonbury, Stonehenge & Avebury, and then one of the suggested Cotswold villages closer to Stratford (Chipping Campden, Broadway, Stowe, etc.)
My husband stayed for 3 nights at the Poppy Bank B&B in Chipping Campden on our honeymoon last October. It was clean, comfortable, affordable and the host was very nice and made a good breakfast. It is just a 5 minute walk to the village, which is absolutely picturesque. Just a warning if you are driving, the roads can be quite confusing and I definitely recommend stopping and asking for directions if you lose your way, we did this on several occassions and everyone was always helpful (but don't worry, you get the hang of it after a few days).
I would also suggest spending a night or two in Bath if you can. It is a beautiful city and had wonderful sights, food, etc. We spent 3 nights there and it was definitely one of our favorite stops. You can do your side trip to Glastonbury and some of the stone circles from there as well, it would be a shorter drive which means less time in the car!
Oops, I meant to say "my husband and I," the way I wrote it makes it sound like my husband went on our honeymoon by himself!
Kimberly, maybe think about staying one night in Bath to do the stone circles, Avebury/Stonehenge and spend some time in Bath then go to Cotswolds. Bath is South of the Cotswolds then you would be heading in the northern direction as planned. We stayed at Anne's Woodville B&B- can walk into town, spent a day going to Wells, Stonehenge (just for the picture)Salisbury then back to Bath. We then went to Broadway (The Crown Trumpet) in the Cotswolds and did our touring from there. Look for the Morris Dancers. We also went to Blenheim Palace from there. Don't forget to get your Great Britain Heritage Pass for the places you will be passing and want to visit.
