1. Is the Town Hall Pharmacy (by the Town Hall) in Upper or Lower Old Town? 2. Can one drive to Upper Old Town and then walk down stairs or drive to the Lower Old Town? 3. Is the Museum of Occupation walking distance from Lower Old Town or do I need a cab, since I have a bad knee and 4 hrs. is all the touring I can do in 1 stretch?
4. Are cabs available and safe to use? Will the driver speak English?
I'll hazard some guesses here. 1. There are a lot more businesses in the lower town so I'd guess it's probably lower. I don't recall many businesses at the top. 2. There isn't a lot of traffic in either, probably local traffic only, I saw many small commercial vans delivering to restaurants first thing in the morning and cars in parking areas, but can't recall anyone driving during the day. The only other traffic I noticed were the big tourist busses at the top dropping off scores of people. You can probably take a taxi to the top, government building or Orthodox Cathedral, and work down. Yes there is a gate to get from upper to lower with stairs. I think there are at least a couple of other options to get between the two. We started at the bottom, walked up through the gate and came back down through the gate. My knees bother me from years of minor (and a couple big) sports injuries. I find walking downhill is harder on my knees than walking uphill. Walking uphill is just a lot more work. Fortunately, mine aren't so bad that I just live with it (and take an occasional ibuprofen). 3. We didn't go to the Museum so I can't say. If it's not right in the area there are plenty of cabs just outside old town that will shuttle you wherever you want to go. 4. Inside old town most of the proprietors speak English well. Expect limited English from the cab drivers - they will know enough to get you where you are going, but not enough to regail you with stories about their country. Even if they say they speak English, they are likely overselling themselves. Other than that, the cabs should be fine. To be safe, I'd probably go to a cab stand where they are lined up.
1. The Pharmacy is in Lower Old Town. 2. I'm not sure about driving private cars, but cars/taxis can get around in both upper and lower old towns - just not everywhere as there are pedestrian only areas. 3. Did not visit the Occupation Museum.
4. I did not take taxis, but in my research for visiting a couple years ago, the taxis did not have a good reputation. Check a current guidebook (RS covers it) for more details.
