My original trip was scheduled for London, Paris and Amsterdam; however, due to the strikes in Paris, I will not be staying there. I am leaving on Friday for London and I'm looking for recommendations of countries/cities to visit that are easily accessible from London and to Amsterdam (ie. Oxford, Cambridge, Germany, Barcelona, etc). Does anyone have any suggestions?
Day trip from London to Windsor via train is very easy. I also think you can take a bus trip to Bath/Stonehenge for another day trip. In Amsterdam we really enjoyed a day trip by train to Haarlem, only about half hour or so. While there try not to miss the Ten Boom Museum right near the central square, we really loved that. We also took a canal boat trip from a place called Boom Chicago, a nightclub that runs a very small boat trip run by ex-pats, very intimate and very reasonable.
From London: day trips Winchester, Canterbury, Salisbury, Oxford , Cambridge; Overnight: York
From Amsterdam: Delft, Bruges, Windmills, fishing villages- Marken, Volendam (?sp?); cheese market at Alkmaar
Hey head north to Scotland. It's a great place to visit. Friendly people, interesting history, good whisky, fun music, good books and fantastic scenery. I would go to Edinburgh and then north to the countryside if you have time.
Pam
Thanks everyone for the suggestions!!
I agree with Pamela that Scotland makes a great choice. Depending on your time you could take a train to York, spend one night then on to Edinburgh. If you have enough time, I'd then go to Inverness. Lots of good day trips from there.
If you want to stay in London there are lots of good day trips by train: Cardiff Wales, Bath, Brighton, Canterburry, Dover, Stratford-upon-Avon, Winchester,York, etc.
Here's the web address of an article I wrote about train day trips out of London

Thanks Toni...your article is great!! We have decided to stay an extra day in London and proceed to Rome, as we found a great deal on flights. We are going to take your advice and do a day trip to Stonehenge and Bath. Also, thanks for the information re: the TKTS booth (similar to New York). We are planning on catching a show and didn't know this was available.
Since you have an extra day in London, try not to miss St Paul's. They have in the back a memorial to all US servicemen who died in WWII while stationed there and stained glass windows that show each US state. Windows by Chagal. Look at the Book of Memory and have a snack downstairs. Found all this from Rick. Also, to save time at the Tower, do the first part of tour and skip the last part in the Chapel. We found it VERY BORING.
Thanks Gail! We will definitely take your advice.
