Anyone have suggestions on destinations for travel thru the North first part of June? Will be traveling with my grown daughter, flying into London then quick flight to ??? Want to see Amsterdamn, Netherlands, Scotland, open to ideas, as we have traveled thru Italy, Spain, South of France several times and would like to see something of the North, but just not sure??? Probably travel by rail, have approx 3 weeks...
London - 5-7 nights, then take the train to York- spend 1-2 nights. Then train to Edinburgh- spend 2-4 nights. Train to Aviemore- 2-4 nights- lots to see and do here. Train to Inverness- 5-7 nights- possible day trips include Isle of Skye, Great Glen, Glencoe, cruise up Loch Ness to see Urquart Castle and Drumnadrochit, whisky tours (also available at Aviemore), Culloden battlefield and Clava Cairns, etc. Train to Glasgow- 1 or 2 nights. Fly to Amsterdamn, spend 3 -5 nights- there's your 3+ weeks. Instead of Amsterdam you could also do Iceland, Oslo, or just expand your time in the UK and cover parts of Wales.
Here's a wild idea for you. Spend some time in London and then head north to Scotland stop at Edinburgh and work your way north by train to Thurso where you can catch a ferry to the Orkney Islands. Explore them, then catch a ferry to Shetland. From there you can catch a ferry to Bergen, and then work your way back down to Amsterdam. I have to tell you that I've only done this trip as far as Orkney, which I loved, but the other half of this is something I'd like to do someday. So, if you do it, tell me how it works out! Here's a link to the ferries into Shetland, stopping at Orkney and Bergen. http://www.shetlandtourism.com/pages/shetland_by_ferry.htm Pam
"Instead of Amsterdam you could also do Iceland, Oslo, or just expand your time in the UK and cover parts of Wales." Why? OP says he wants to see Amsterdam.
Having done most of them, I think Toni's suggestions are good. maybe a little more time on the west coast of scotland, I found the area around Ullapool interesting for a day or so. Inverness is in a very interesting area- convenient to a lot of sights. we also were lucky to see Braemar and Balmoral when the Highland Games were on.
