Suffolk, England suggestions re pubs and places to see

We plan to spend 3 weeks in Suffolk on a home exchange and wonder what people would recommend in that area. Of course I can read the guidebooks, but sometimes this helpline offers unusual suggestions. Thanks. Julia

Hi Julia,

I spent 10 days in this area in 2004 visiting family in Mildenhall/Lakenheath AFB. Oh you are in for a treat. This is an amazing area with so much to do. Where to start!!

Bury St. Edmunds was my favorite small town, do check out the Nutshell the supposed smallest pub in England and just down the road that T's in front of the abby ruins. Just seeing the Angel Hotel is worth the visit, but the abby ruins, the cathedral and walking about the town, what a great day.

Goodstone Gardens, The Iceni Village, the town of Thetford has a ruin that is neat, the Norfolk Castle, the town of Ely and it's magnificent cathedral. From Ely you can take the train into Kings Cross in London if you want to visit London while you are there.

I could go on but I have to get ready for work and I can't find my diary of the trip right now. But do look up east anglia on the net and enjoy planning your trip, you will really get a feel for the country by staying in this area. Enjoy! Pam

The countryside and coastline in the Essex/Suffolk borders is well worth a visit eg "Constable Country", the area where the landscape painter John Constable grew up. Many of the scenes from his paintings are still recognisable. Also visit the small medieval town of Lavenham and many other unspoiled villages.

Southwold has the sleepy charm of an old fashioned English seaside town. Its lighthouse is in the middle of town. For the exact opposite visit a "chips with everything" resort like Great Yarmouth in Norfolk, if only for the experience!

Counrty pubs are everywhere, you will be spoiled for choice.

The Good Pub Guide is pretty reliable.
