Success!!! York in 24 hours!

Earlier I had asked if you can do York in 36 hours our less. Because there was no train service from Edinburgh to York (we had to take a bus to Newcastle then a train to York) on a Sunday I only had 24 hours in York! I am happy to report that I was able to do everything I wanted to do in York, visit York Minster and climbed the 276 steps to the top of York Minster Tower, attend Evensong, visit the York Castle Museum, walk The Shambles and the markets, and walk on the wall! Although I was able to experience everything I planned to do in York, I still wished I had one more day in the city. More details and photographs to be posted later at http://ithinkiamgettinglost.blogspot.com/.

Again thanks to everyone who helped me with the York portion of my trip! Currently in Bath were I am drenched in rain! ugh!

Joel, not sure where you heard there isn't train service from Edinburgh to York on Sundays. We took the train to York on a Sunday. I also just looked at National Rail website entered a Sunday date in October and there were trains leaving Edinburg to York every thirty minutes. But with railwork going on it takes longer then normal.

I was in Bath exactly 4 years ago today and guess what? It was raining!!! Funny about the train though.

The bus we took was a rail replacement bus. There were three buses for the 09:30 departure Sunday. Pretty chaotic as passengers tried to get on the direct buses to Newcastle instead of the ones that had a stop or two. The man behind the counter at the train reservation desk was the one who told me there are no trains from Edinburgh to Newcastle (then to York) on Sunday because of railwork. :)

If you take a closer look at the duration of the trip on a Sunday and a weekday, you will notice that the Sunday duration from Edinburgh to York is 4 hours or so (took longer for me!), while the weekday duration is only 2.5 hours. The website will show 'trains' leaving Edinburgh for York via Newcastle every 30 mins even on sundays because the replacement buses are still serviced by national rail companies. :)

Hi Joel, Wow! It sounds like you made the most of the time that you had in York! I'm glad to hear that you made it work, had a great trip, and saw all of the things that you wanted to see! Looking forward to the photos.

We thought York was such a cool city. One of our favorite parts was taking the free walking tours with a volunteer that RS talks about in his England book. Our guide has lived in York all his life and gave us a great history of the city as well as showing us all the sights. We stayed at the Crescent House on Bootham, which was great in case anyone is looking for a place. Wonderful city!
