I seem to remember there's a placard you can get for your car in Ireland that's used by student drivers (and might make folks a little more cautious around me, even though I'm not a student). Does anyone know where to get one of those placards/stickers/etc in Ireland?
Dunno, but I'd guess the same place you buy tags. I'd also be very sure of the legality of this notion. In any case, the driver you need to be most concerned about is you.
You can buy them in any gas station/convenience store, but I would be cautious about doing so. The "learner driver" designation carries with it some restrictions that other drivers are not subject to. We bought some of the window clings to take home with us, but were advised not to use them in Ireland. I'm not sure what the limitations were, so you might want to do some research about that before you do it.
At one time the rental car agencies offered a "Welcome to Britain" window decal (to warn other drivers?). Not sure whther ther is something similar in Ireland
The only time you will want to take off the red 'L' sticker (for learners) is on the motorways (highways)...it is illegal for learner drivers to driver on the motorway. Will you be the lone driver in the car? If so, best not to have the 'L' sticker, again illegal to drive without a passenger. That said, I have seen many learners doing both. If you are driving on a full American license and pulled over, it will not be a problem...the guards here will understand.
