Stopped by a plain clothes policeman in London? Scam alert

Will you be in London? Reports from Scotland yard of gangs of Eastern Europeans targeting Games visitors and other visitors to London by pretending to be plain clothes police and demanding to be given bank details, pin numbers and wallets. According to the Evening Standard, the bogus officers show a fake warrent card and claim they are carrying out a security check. They also "impose fines". Scotland Yard asks that tourists dial 999 if they believed they had been targeted by conmen posing as police.

I know I shouldn't say this, but are people really stupid enough to give even a "police officer" their bank details and PIN,, gosh its scary to think that some people even leave home! Thanks Nigel, it was good of you to post about it. I hope someone posts this on the London forums on all the other websites too..

Thanks Nigel. I know it might seem gullible to hand over such information to a police officer- but London gets visitors from all over the world. Some of them come from countries where the police are not to be messed with; they would be very vulnerable.
