Is there a way to leave london, see Stonehenge and maybe a little of Salisbury and return home to London on the same day? Would it be cheaper to do a private tour or just buy the railpasses and the bus transfer myself? I can't seem to find the timetables for July? Can anyone help?
You can take a train from Waterloo Station to Salisbury, there are two trains per hour and the trip is 80 minutes. Then you can get the Stonehenge Tour Bus at the Salisbury Bus station, there is a bus that leaves about every 30 minutes. Or you could take a tour...Goldentours.com..has a tour that takes you to Bath, Salisbury and Stonehenge....or there is Evan Evans Tours..http://www.goldentours.com..which also goes to Bath, Salisbury and Stonehenge...both tour companies has a tour only to Stonehenge also. Just go to their websites and look to see what they offer and if it's what you want. We have used both companies and both are great. It would be so easy to do it on your own also, so really it is what you would feel more comfortable doing.
Thanks for the help guys!!! I can't wait to go!
I thought I had read that the bus from Salisbury was discontinued. Is that not (or no longer) the case?
It's still in operation........from this website..

London Walks does an explorer day to Stonehenge and Salisbury one day a week. I took this tour about 10 years ago and really enjoyed it. You take the train to Salisbury and they give you a guided walk of the cathedral. You have a break for lunch on your own in the town. You then go by bus to Stonehenge where you get another guided walk. Finally you return by train to London. Check the London Walks site at www.walks.com.
Michael, I think you are thinking of the public bus that was cancelled. You used to be able to take a public bus from Salisbury to Stonehenge and this was very inexpensive. I read that this was cancelled and now the only option is the more expensive tourist bus.
By now you may have done this already, but a couple of years ago, I took the Stonehenge/Avebury/Salisbury day trip through Astral Travel. It was excellent -- we didn't see any of Salisbury except the cathedral, but seeing Avebury more than made up for it. The tour had no more than 10 people on it in a comfortable little bus, and the driver was very knowledgeable. Four stars!

Astral went out of business well over 2 years ago.
The same tour is now run by International Friends mostly with ex Astral staff.
Oh, I'm sorry to hear that! Thanks for the info.
I took a private tour and found it a good value several years ago but we saw extra things and were picked up and dropped at our B&B
