Stonehenge day trip recommendations

Does anyone have recommendations for a Stonehenge/Old Sarum/Salisbury/Avebury tour operator? This will be a day trip from London. We will be doing Bath another day so we don't need that included. We also prefer mini buses to large coaches but that is not a deal breaker. Dawn

I second the London Walks day trips. I've done three: Cambridge, Brighton and Avebury/Lacock. If I wanted to see Stonehenge I'd try to do it via London Walks (although having seen Avebury now, Stonehenge isn't high on my list anymore). (EDITED because I didn't look closely at the OP beyond "Stonehenge/Salisbury" to see the other 2 listed destinations. That's a lot to pack into one day. I thoroughly enjoyed the Avebury/Lacock day trip, and it was a full day.) The London Walks day trips are reasonably priced, and because you take the train out of London in the morning, you aren't stuck in a vehicle crawling through traffic to get out of town. On the day trips I took, they had rented motor coaches at our destination on two trips where they were needed to get us from the train station to the area where we walked (Cambridge and Avebury/Lacock). All done with minimum fuss and maximum efficiency. The only possible downside with the LW day trips, would be if a truly huge crowd shows up for the excursion. I was a little nervous about that but the group was a manageable size on each trip.

I've taken the London Walks Stonehenge and Salisbury Walk. You take the train to Salisbury where you first take a guided walk through the Cathedral. There is a break for lunch (on your own) in Salisbury and then you travel by bus to Stonehenge for a walking tour. I enjoyed it, but it can be in a larger group (they seem to vary by time of year).

We are going to Bath in October and following Rick's advice we contacted a private guide (celtichorzons.com Alan Price 01373/461-784). Based on our interests he has arranged a customized tour for the two of us. The cost will be 200 Pounds, but for a our once-in-a-lifetime trip it will be wonderful.
