We've flown and cruised in and out of Stockholm. We stay within a few blocks of the central station then take the subway around. Usually at a Scandic hotel. It's super easy.

Just got back from there. We stayed at the Freys Hotel, literally just across the street from the Arlanda Express exit which is actually a block down from the Central train station. Across the street were two of the Nordic hotels and a block down was the Radisson next to the station. We found it to be very central, easy to get taxis and buses. Only limitation was very few restaurants by comparison. Belgian Bar at Freys was good, as was El Amir a block to the north. Also Jensens Bofhus nearby was pretty good.

Have you checked out the recommendations in the RS Stockholm "Snapshot" Guide Book yet. Lots of good information.

I'm staying at the Clarion and tripadvisor.com gave it great reviews. Prices seem reasonable too.

We just returned from a week in Stockholm, and stayed in Ostermalm/Gardet within a short walk of the Karlaplan T-bana station. Central Stockholm is small enough that you can walk to anywhere from anywhere (and we did!), but it's also nice to have the T-bana near by. Our location was great, but not right in the center of all the tourist attractions (we considered that a positive). Given the time of year we were there (last week of July) I would not have wanted to stay in Gamla Stan. Too crowded, at least along the more touristed streets. Might be okay in the off-season. The northern part of Sodermalm is interesting, not as touristy, and a bit cheaper, but not as "chic" as right-on-the-main-waterfront locations. Anywhere in central Stockholm should be fine, and if near a T-bana station, that's a plus. The surface bus system is also great, plus the tram, so it's a very easy city to get around. Don't know how long you will be there, but for stays of more than 2-3 nights we always try to rent an apartment. For this trip we rented through www.cocoonstockholm.com, and were very happy with their service and our accommodations. If you have enough time, spend some time out of Stockholm proper. We purchased multi-day transit passes that gave us unlimited access to anywhere the bus/tunnelbana/train system went within Stockholm County. Did some day trips to various "ends of the line" and thoroughly loved it. Have a great trip!
