Stockholm Hotels

I have been traveling through Europe on Rick's Best Of Europe Book. It doesn't cover Stockholm. Any recommendations for good hotels (good price) there? Thanks

We really liked the Connect Hotel. It's not in Central Stockholm, but was 10 min by commuter train from Stockholm Central @ Alvsjo. These trains ran every 10 minutes or so until midnight.

The hotel was part of the Stockholm A La Carte program so if you have that card your transportation is free.

They basically offer two types of rooms

  1. Quick Sleep which was like 399 SEK (~75 dollars). These are essentially closets with twin beds. Really there only to sleep in. Shared Bathroom

  2. Normal rooms with private bath were like 700 SEK (130-140 dollars). Well furnished, very clean and actually a pretty competitive price.

Who knows what types of deals you can find on a business room off peak. A lot of people claim to have found great ones.

Brian,

You didn't give us much to go on, but I can give you three great choices with different attributes...

The Chapman is world famous...one of the best hostel experiences you will ever have...its a clipper ship, moored in the harbor across from Gamla Stan...they just refurbished it and it will be there another 40 years if the towns people have a say. The Vinatappare is a great small personal hotel (only 6 rooms) located in an old house in Gamla Stan, mid priced great location...and finally the Reisen...located right on the Harbor, on Gamla Stan, near everything (Palace, Nobel Museum, etc)...a little more but with the great breakfasts, worth it...(our breakfast would have cost $40-50 ea in the us for the kind of food they served)

In May, we had a bad expereince with the Hotel Connect by the Arlanda airport. Too bad, because our cousin's boss recommended it. The decor and design were great but the beds were VERY UNCOMFORTABLE.

We have also stayed at Maude's Hotel...next to a subway station (but not noisy)...very nice and great beds...quiet and pleasant......we would go back again.

Stayed in a hotel - Best Western across from the Central Train Station once and that was fine.

The Queen's Hotel in RSTEVES book was fine too!

keep in mind...you will just have realize the prices are going to be steep!!!!

You might try some of apts via on-line websourcrs...

Brian,
We just returned from Stockholm and as you might guess the hotels are not cheap. Be sure that you stay in a neighborhood that is near all the major sights because travel back and forth may cause the cost of a cheap hotel to rise considerably. We have stayed at the Sheraton and Nordic Sea which are expensive but near everything. You can walk to Gamla Stan and the downtown district. But if you are on a budget you may want to investigate the Hotel Ricoh which is along the major pedestrian street Drottninggatan or even cheaper the floating hotel yacht which was once owned by the movie star Barbara Huttton. The yacht is quite large and advertises a very cheap rate. There are other hostel like floating hotels. Be careful of places that advertise way out of the city. Economically in the long run you will probably pay as much as a more expensive place in town. If you are interested in any great yet cheap restaurants I can give you some.

Hi Brian, We just returned from Stockholm as well and stayed at Hotel Hellsten. We thought it was a great location- only 2 subway stops from the Central Station (the subway is very easy and convenient). It wasn't cheap, but was the best combination of price/location/nice hotel I could find. It worked out to be around $220 a night. I've seen deals for them on Hotels.com. They also have a great breakfast- we'd definitely stay there again.

Brian, we stayed about 10 min outside Stockholm by train and thought it well worth the time for the savings. Welcome Hotel Barkarby making reservations through www.visit-stockholm.com which included the Stockholm a la carte card and that included entrance to all most all attractions and public transport. It was our cheapest stay of the trip. Just FYI, take a look at their web site as the hotel isn't fancy, but we slept well and ate well and it was 2 min. to the train stop, so we were well satisfied.

In 2005 I stayed a couple of nights at the Queen's Hotel in Stockholm. It was recommended in Rick's 2005 Scandinavia guidebook, and it worked out OK for me (especially since I showed up in town without a reservation and it was the second or third place I tried).

Queen's Hotel is within walking distance of the train station (provided you're not weighted down with a bunch of baggage), and is located on a main shopping/cafe drag. I enjoyed walking out the door each morning, grabbing a coffee, and windowshopping while I headed off to whatever I was planning to do or see that day. For a solo traveler like me, the rooms were serviceable, the staff was nice, the price was reasonable (back in 2005 when the dollar was a bit stronger and oil wasn't nuts, at any rate), and the breakfast buffet filled me up just fine (helps if you're not lactose intolerant).

Of course, I'd recheck the latest edition of RS Scandi guide to see if he still recommends it. Recent reviews on Tripadvisor indicate that it is under new management and undergoing renovation. Here is the hotel website:

I don't know if this reply is too late or not but we stayed at the Lady Hamilton on Gamla Stan this past June. Hotel rooms were small with no air conditioning but well appointed, very clean, & very modern bathrooms. We loved it!! The hotel has a great history and the staff was superb. Also, the hotel was down the block from the palace - so close, the drum core woke us up in the morning with their practice. :-) Gamla Stan is a great location with excellent restaurants, bars, and shopping. It's close to major sights and all transportation. It's beautiful to walk around the streets or the Palace after all the tourist leave. Even if you don't stay at the Lady Hamilton, pick a hotel on Gamla Stan.
