I've always wanted to go to the Steeplechases. Anyone take a train from London to a nearby track? I noticed one town with a course and rail access, but I was concerned about the safety walking between the course and rail station.
Generally it would be very safe. You will usually find many ordinary folk" doing exactly what you are- just follow the crowd.
At the right time of the year you may even try "point-to-point" very amateurish steeplechase. Usualy put on by local hunt clubs, often on temporary courses in a rented farmers fields. Very "English"
Going to the races is a great way to spend a day in England. There's a race somewhere in the country almost every day of the year. Below is a link that will give you all the info you need as far as schedules, types of races, and locations. FYI - schedules are referred to as 'Fixtures' and steeplechase races are usually called 'National Hunt' races. Many courses have both national hunt and 'flat' races; the cooler months having more NH races. A really classy racecouse you can get to from London by train (Waterloo station) is Sandown Park. On racedays the train stops right at a track entrance. http://britishhorseracing.com
There is always Ascot west of London, next to the Queen's backyard of Windsor (Castle) Great Park. http://www.ascot.co.uk/ Or set in pretty countryside south of London, Epsom in Surrey. http://www.epsomderby.co.uk/
Thank you for the information. I've checked out the sites, and it looks interesting.
