Staying in Stratford City

I am considering staying in the Stratford City area for a 4 night stay. Is that too far and too time consuming from the center of London?
Please help! Thanks! :-)

I'll line up right behind Keith if we're all talking about the same place. I wandered out there right before Thanksgiving to see what they'd done for the Olympics. The area is a mess and has nothing to offer. As a point of reference, on all but that last trip, I've been staying further out - - in Barking - - which would give the average tourist a case of the screeming meemies.

Yes, Stratford in general is still pretty grim and the Olympic Park is closed for post-Games renovation this year. If you're staying in the Westfield Stratford City mall itself that might be OK. But do you really want to stay in the kind of character-free shopping mall you can find in any US city?

Hello Keith! Thanks for responding (as well as Ed & Philip). Yes, I am referring to the area by the Olympic Village. There are various hotel's within the Westfield shopping area. The hotels are clean and new which is a nice draw, in addition, they are reasonably priced. Yes, Philip that point absolutely crossed my mind! So, what area(s) would you suggest to stay that are: 1. safe 2. centrally located and easy tube access 3. economical (less than $200/129 BPS ) 4. give a sense of living like an English(wo)man Also, Where would suggest we stay away from? Thanks for the advice!
