We are looking at renting a flat for 8 nights in London and saw some good possibilities in Greenwich. We are walkers when we are in cities, doing a couple of miles each way to where we stay isn't a big deal. Would Greenwich be a good choice? One of the days we'll be there is Christmas so we are looking for somewhere that we can spend the day walking about seeing the sites.
Greenwich is a lovely area, the park is especially nice and they have a good market on Sundays. But it is removed from the"main" part of London. It is not within walking distance of the "usual" sites and transportation is shut down on Christmas day. That said, the park and the Greenwich ares itself might be just the ticket for a Christmas wander. For other days, there is easy access to London proper via the Docklands Light Railway, which is considered part of the Tube.

I agree with Toni. Greenwich is nice but quite a way out.
As well as the Docklands Light Railway the 188 bus is quite useful. It takes you in to Waterloo, which is close to the London Wheel, and on to close to the British Museum.
There's some good travel information here

It's possible to walk right down the south bank of the river to the centre. Not something you'd want to do every day, it takes around 3 hours, but is an interesting walk. About half way you walk past the Mayflower pub, which is worth a visit

There's some details of the more central part of the walk here

Have a good trip

I wouldn't stay in Greenwich over Christmas asa it is just too far away from the points of interest in London considering that you are going to have a transportation problem over the holidays!
I would stay in a more central location where you can take some walks.
Check out exactly where in Greenwich the flat is located. There are some nice and some less nice streets/areas. If you want an informed opinion on the location post on the London Forum on TripAdvisor, one of the regular posters lives there.
Also the Dockland Light Railway will be subject to lots of engineering works until the Olympic Games, especially at weekends.
