Has anyone stayed in a castle in Wales and Scotland? Suggestions?
I haven't stayed in a castle, but I read an article in "In Britan" Magazine a couple of years ago about castles in the UK that had been converted into hotels and even a few that are now hostels. You might see if your local library has back copies- its a great magazine by the way.
You're probably not going to find one in Wales, at least not a real, fighting castle. There are a few hotels that bill themselves as being in castles, but they're either 'on the site of .....' or something built in the mid-1800's. In Scotland, Borthwick or Dalhouise might fit the bill for authenticity. They're both near Edinburgh. I've stayed at the former and only driven by the latter. Neither impessed me that much.
I have stayed in two castles and they were very different. ;
) The first was Carbisdale Castle which is in Sutherland and I celebrated my 45th birthday there! Here's the link. http://www.syha.org.uk/hostels/highlands/carbisdale_castle.aspx. A few years later I stayed at Stonefield Castle which is in Argyle. I was attending the Tarbert Music Festival. The rate at Stonefield was American Plan and so included breakfast and dinner. Here's a link to Celtic Castle Hotels. Stonefield is listed as well as several other castle hotels. There are only two Welsh castles. I don't know if they are fighting castles or not. ; ) http://www.celticcastles.com/. It's a lot of fun to do this so I hope you decide to pursue it. Pam
Every now and then I re-read an article that describes some apartments on the grounds of Hamton Court Palace (I know thats England) thar you can rent. Now thats an address i would like to throw around
