We're taking flights into and out of Dublin. So we're looking for recommendations to stay one or two nights. Is a quick trip into Dublin worth it or just creating harried experiences?
Definitely so. I'd suggest 2 nights, so you have one day to get the "lay of the land", figure out the bus system, and another day to explore after that. There's so much great history there that would, IMHO, be a shame to miss.
You can find a place fairly cheaply in the City Center. Taxi fare from Dublin airport is around 30 euro and you can take the bus for under 10 euro.
The hop-on hop-off bus tour is a nice way to see the city and it brings you to the major sites. I'd rather take that then regular public transportation as it's really mental in Dublin
I agree that the hop-on hop-off bus is great as a general introduction to the city. I'm not sure what the previous poster is suggesting by saying that the public transportation in Dublin is "mental". I found it very easy to use.
mental meaning queues down the block waiting to get on the coach in the busier locations and depending on your luck/route possibly sitting with some less than savory characters
I may be a bit biased though
The only problem we had with the buses was knowing which one to take. Get a good guidebook and you'll be fine. We actually ran into some very helpful people on the buses, told us when we needed to get off.
We just came back two weeks ago. Found the hop-on-hop off bus a great bargain. It gave us the lay of the land, interesting tidbits about the city, and 24 hours of transportation that took us near everywhere we wanted to go.
From the airport into the city center, AirCoach bus is 7.00 euros, and public bus is 2.20 euros.
Taxi is costly if you can avoid them.

There is a deal you can get from the airport. Round trip into town on the Airlink bus, one day on the hop on/hop off bus (although I used mine for two days with no questions asked) and it also covered the regular city buses. I don't remember off the top of my head how much it was, but I think it was about the same price they usually charge for the HOHO bus by itself. You can buy the pass in a machine by the bus stop outside of the airport. It is good for 3 days, so perfect for you.
