I am completley unfamiliar with this airport which I will use in July, coming from JFK....Anyone w/knowledge of same: Reasonable Accommodation near to Stanstead Airport? Return flight is at 10:15 a.m., so must spend the night very near to airport....Would anyone know if the city/town of Stanstead is quite near airport? Things to see/Anything to do/place to stay, within the town proper? Many thanks!!
Greetings
Stanstead is well outside London and pretty much in the middle of not much. The closest interesting place in Cambridge, which would be nice daytrip. I think it's accessible by taxi or train - taxi being the most direct route to the airport and train the best for getting into London.

If you google Stanstead airport UK, there is tons of info about hotels, how to get to & from, etc., etc.
Make sure you spell it correctly, though, or you won't find it: www.stanstedairport.com
Even with a 10:15 departure you do NOT need to spend the night near Stansted. Stay in London and take the Stansted Express train from Liverpool Street to Stansted (45 minutes). See this page for all your options on getting from London to Stansted: www.londontoolkit.com/travel/stansted.htm.
The nearest town to Stansted is Bishops Stortford, Stansted itself is a very small village.
The Radisson is the most handy, connected to the terminal, rates though are $200+. Holiday inn Express is cheaper about $160 and has a shuttle bus (charge). There are a few B&B's about $120 for a twin with breakfasts and owner often will run you to.from airport terminals. See: www.londontoolkit.com/travel/stansted_hotels.htm
Cambridge is the best place to visit in the area, about 30 minutes by train from the airport.
