I had a wonderful 2-day private tour in St. Petersburg this July. We were on a Baltic cruise and wanted to avoid a large bus group, so had arranged beforehand with a highly recommended tour agency. This has to be done ahead of time so the traveler's tickets can be arranged. For probably less than the ship's excursion, we had our own driver and comfortable van, our charming and intelligent guide for just 4 of us. One can tailor the tour to include what you like, or go along with a suggested highlights of St. Petersburg. We had no trouble going through the checkpoint as the ship had independent travelers leave first. Our guide was waiting.
