I would like to take a quick (as in a few hours) bus? train? trip to St Ives from Penzance. I would love to hear from travelers who have been there and have advice on what not to miss. Thank you!!
Hi Dianne, You will no doubt take a bus from Penzance to St Ives - six miles. Land's End is a fun trip (bus)as well. St Michael's Mount is easy by bus as is the nearby village of Mousehole. All of these sites have their charm so you can't go wrong. St Ives is simply a very charming, small, old fishing village. The quaint village/bay/shops/resturants are the reasons to spend time there. You really need to walk in order to get the feel of the village. Enjoy!
The Tate St. Ives museum of modern & Contemporary art for starters.
Hi Dianne, St. Ives is 10 miles north of Penzance so it will be easy to get there from Penzance. As mentioned above Tate St. Ives is a great place to visit...it displays the work of artists tho lived and worked in St. Ives, mostly from 1925-1975. Also, Barbara Hepworth Musem and Sculpture Gardens in another place worth the visit.
Hi Dianne, lots of folks seem to enjoy the Tate ST. Ives. I found it interesting. If you change your mind and stay overnight I can recommend the "Norway BB" where I stayed several nights. It is located very near the Tate. The train from Penzance will cost you around $28 and approx 10-15 minutes. The bus fare is about a quarter of that.
Thanks everyone! I would like to soak up the scenery of these lovely Cornish towns as much as I can. I would like to save museums or galleries for a return trip some day. On Google maps I found "Wharf Road" which runs all along......the wharf and beach. Is this a central area? Any suggestions for lunch?
7 wives?
7 Wives ??? I didn't know what that meant, probably a pub?? so I (of course) googled it and oh boy! It sounds like a fun place for two old ladies to hang out.. Seriously, I am going to check it out...for the local flavor and a brew or two. Thanks Denny!
Yikes! Dianne, I had no idea it was a pub, honest! LOL. I was thinking of the old nursery rhyme, the only thing that sprang to mind when I saw your post. " As I was going to St Ives
I met a man with seven wives
Each wife had seven sacks
Each sack had seven cats
Each cat had seven kits
Kits, cats, sacks, wives
How many were going to St Ives?"
But ale trumps poetry, and I like your plan. Have a pint on me!
Denny.. needless to say that rhyme came up on Google also...hence the name of the Pub.
We took the bus to St. Ives from Penzance. Loved our time there. Bus stops at the top of the harbour. Enjoy the walk. Lots of galleries, eating spots. Wander up the little streets off the main drag. We found a charming pottery shop in one of them.
Denny, a few days ago I'd looked at this thread, and had the nursery rhyme in my head since then. Looked at it just now, and voila. If there's not already a website for fans of nursery rhymes, maybe we should start one. Curly locks, curly locks...
