St Andrews

I would like to give my husband a trip to Scotland for his 60th birthday. His dream has been to play golf at St Andrews. His birthday is in Oct -but I am open to the off season for good rates. Any suggestions out there?

Hi Pat, my husband played at St Andrews in May. What you would have to do, is get there a day early, have your husband put his name in for the next day. He will be put with a group of a twosome or threesome. Green fees are the same from April 16 to 14 Oct. Your husband will have to have an offical card from where he golfs with his stating his handicap. He will be able to rent clubs there also. Here is a website for St. Andrews.

It was mentioned that rates were the same April-Oct, do you advised not to golf from Oct-April or is course closed?

Pat, no the course is open year around. They do close for a couple of days for maintaince. If I was you I would call 011-44-1334-466666 when you know the dates that you are thinking of, then they will be able to tell you if those dates are good, if not then they would be able to tell when it would be good.

Pat, just thinking about where you are going, even when the open is there it rains a lot. I'm guessing your husband hasn't golfed much in the rain? Anyway, the weather is a HUGE part of that course. The wind, the rain and the sand/grass are all a part of the experience, but you are taking a great chance with weather after October. Late September and early October are usually cool but nice (generalization of course). What a great gift!

Pat, it does rain there but I sure wouldn't say a lot. We have been there several times and Jim has played each time. When Jim played in May he was grouped with a father and two sons from here in the states. They go over every year to play they said and haven't had any trouble with rain. I'm sure that if your husband loves to play golf as much as it sounds like he does, he would play even if it is raining. Just the experience of playing The Old Course is a high for a golfer. I know he will be thrilled with the gift.
