Spencer House

Has anyone toured Spencer House in London? We will be taking our 2 teenage granddaughters to London the end of June and thought about this. Would be nice to show them one of the big old mansions. If you've been there, is this worth a visit? Not sure how crowded it gets during this time of the year. Is there anything about Princess Diana in this home? Thanks.

Hi Sharon,
I thought the tour at Spencer House was worth the visit. It is only open on Sunday and I don't think too many people know about it. I visited a couple of years ago. There were only about 10 people on my tour and it was no more than an hour. When the tour ended, there were only a handful of people waiting. I didn't prebook ... just showed up and a tour had just started. They asked if I wanted to join the tour in progress or wait for the next one. I opted to join the tour in progress and they escorted me to the first room of the tour. While I think they mentioned Diana's familial connection, there really wasn't anything about Princess Diana in the home. The family stopped living there in the 1920s. After that, the house had a series of occupants and businesses that used it. They then restored it and furnished with period furnishings. The house is right on Green Park, but the entrance is from the street side. There was a small walkway between two brick walls that cut from the park over to the street.

Dito everything Laura said. I went a year ago and enjoyed it but if you are doing this for Diana fans, they might be disapointed. She spent her time in the country house according to the docent. If you like the grand houses, you will enjoy it. I had been to London many times before so this was a B site for me, but really enjoyed it. It is a rare opportunity to see a city home in London. The modern buildings around it were WWII bomb sites. I was fortunate to have been in a group of elderly French gentry that knew the family and almost led the tour, probably 10 of us in total too, so that made it very interesting. It started on the hour, exactly, so plan accordingly and enjoy! Plenty of places near by to do the Sunday roast.

That settles it. Thanks to both of you - I think we need to do this!
