After 2-3 days in Oslo, we will have 3 days to spend in the Sognefjord area in July. Not sure whether to travel to Bergen first, whether to do the Nutshell, stay somewhere along the fjord overnight (Balestrand?), etc. Any suggestions?
Here's what we did in 2005. Pick up rental car in Bergen, drive to Voss where we stayed at Fleischer's, drive north, then east to Flam, take the Flam train round trip, drive to Vik to see the stave church, ferry to Balestrand, overnight at Kvikne's (stay in the old part of hotel). If you only have one more night, take the ferry back to Bergen, see the Bryggen, stay at the Admiral Clarion hotel ONLY IF YOU CAN Reserve one of the rooms with a view of the Bryggen. Since we had a few more days, we continued north from Balestrand through glaciers to the Geiranger Fjord, taking the ferry down its length, then driving back to Bergen.
I would take the Nutshell tour of something similary. If you can, spend two nights in Bergen, which is a scenic, interesting town. It's also worthwhile to spend a night in Balestrand.
Here's what I did in July 2005. Oslo to Myrdal, then the train down to Flam. Boat to Balestrand, stayed overnight, walked and hiked the next morning. In the afternoon, I took the high speed boat to Bergen and arrived in the late evening, still light at 60 degrees north.
