Sites while driving Moreton-in-Marsh to Conwy

Hello again, all. One last question before we're off. On one of our days, we'll be driving from near Moreton-in-Marsh to Conwy, Wales. I was thinking of hitting Caenarfon Castle enroute, but it's very close to Conwy...any other ideas for scenic stops to break up the ride? Or should we just take in the scenery?

I've driven it, but cannot remember any specifics to direct you to, but it was a wonderful drive. I always just meander along until I see something of interest, whether it is a vantage point from which to photograph, or a pub for lunch, or a sign that directs me to a town I didn't even know I wanted to see. I tend to just wait to see what it has to offer, but I am sure if there is a 'must see' one of the other posters will know.

Stoke-on-Trent is a fun stop if you would like to see the Potteries which have factory tours for such companys as Wedgwood, which has a nice museum with history of this industry. Chester is the best entrance into Northern Wales. You can walk on the ramparts around the walled city which was first built in Roman times as the fort for the XX army division. Betws-y-coed is a great stop. It looks like a fairytale on a bubbling brook. You should look up the rest of King Edwards castles while you are in Wales...they can be all on one pass.

There are some nice places in Shropshire which borders Wales, and which you can pass through. These include Ironbridge, which is an early Industrial Revolution site, but also very scenic in spite of its industrial past. I also like Stokesey Castle in southern Shropshire.

Another vote for Ironbridge Gorge and Blists Hill. Blists Hill took us an entire day but we like to see everything AND have tea. We liked Betws-y-Coed but better still Beddgelert which we used as a base for several days. If you can manage, the Llechwedd Slate Caverns are a wonder. Highly recommended. And of course the train ride up Mt.Snowdon. Make reservations. Loved N. Wales. My sister wants to live in Criccieth with, but not because of, it's easy access to Portmerion.

Betws-y-coed is one of my favorite places in Wales! Prestatyn is super close to Conwy, but is a lovely little resort town. Nice beach, fun holiday atmosphere. Also near-ish is Chester, which I also loved - many half-timbered buildings, super cathedral, medieval city walls, the Eastgate (Eastwich?) Clock - and a Roman museum which I loved, as an ex-classics student. Really do like Chester. And of course just taking in the scenery would work, too!

At the Potteries Museum & Art Gallery in Hanley (Stoke-On-Trent area) you can stop and see the Staffordshire Hoard, if you like ancient Anglo-Saxon artifacts. The Birmingham Museum also has part of the Hoard on display.
