Shorts for Men ???? England and Scotland

My husband just asked me to post the above question. We did Italy last year and skipped the shorts. (I don't do shorts anymore...ugly knees.) Let us know your thoughts.
Thanks, Lea in San Diego

WEll if he could pass the shorts in Italy,, where it is so darn hot.. don't worry about them in Scotland where its cold,, LOL

Of course he can wear his shorts in England and Scotland, no one will mind,, well, maybe they will if you are planning high tea at the Ritz,, LOL

He can wear them, but, particularly in Scotland, he probably will not want to! It is not San Diego or Italy weather-wise. You will probably find it cool to cold compared to SoCal. You do not say when you are going, but one day in July in the Scottish highlands I had on cords, wool shirt, lambswool sweater and golf jacket....and I was cold! AND I was raised there, though have not lived there for over 30 years.

Your hubby can definitely wear shorts in the UK. British men are known for wearing shorts with socks and sandals so he cannot possibly look any worse than them!

I don't think he'll want to wear shorts. Look at a globe or map of Europe, it's way North.

He would be more likely to wish he had pants. Bring one pair of shorts on the odd chance that you get a hot day but don't rely on hot weather. Of course, having said that, it will be scorching hot on your vacation and he'll wonder who said he wouldn't want shorts.

Some Scots wear kilts but they're wool and they wear them with thick knee-high wool socks so it's not exactly board shorts and flip-flops.

I grew up in San Diego and remember we all pulled out our best ski parkas when it got below 60.

I don't know that I'm adding anything new, but I would say whether or not your husband wants to wear shorts depends on his body chemistry. Last summer, I wore shorts all the way through the UK (York, Edinburgh, Manchester, North Wales, The Cotswolds, and London) and I was fine everywhere. I even wore hiking sandals and only had to put on socks 1 day in Edinburgh. I did travel with the zip off cargo pants just in case and I think there was one day where I wore the legs on, though there were a few mornings where I had them on and then took them off after a couple of hours.

If he is "hot natured" he'll love that he has them. If he's "cold natured" he'd probably prefer the pants.

BTW, I generally wore polo shirts with my shorts to have at least a collar on. It doesn't make the outfit a ton less casual, but it is better than t-shirts.

My husband wore shorts in Scotland last June. He also wore them in England both times we were there, which was in the summer. He is not exactly a fashion plate, but I don't remember thinking he looked out of place. He prefers shorts unless it's in the low 50s or colder.

When I walk in the Highlands in late August, early September, I always have convertible pants and so do most of the group on the trip. I have taken them off on some occasions and one year I even got a Scottish suntan, but for the most part I'm really happy to have the legs on. The weather in Scotland can be defined by one word: Changeable. So, layers including layers on your pant length should be part of your planning. And, always, a waterproof rain jacket with a hood. I just came back from the beach here on the south coast of the UK. The sun is shining for what feels like the first time this year and lots of the fellas at the beach are sporting shorts along with a nice line of fish-belly white legs, socks and sandals.
So wear what you like!!!
