Short Trip to England

My husband and I have been to England many times. My cousin and friend from Sweden were going to join us this next September for 2 weeks (they've never been before) - 3 days in London and the remainder in the countryside. However, they have just discovered they have shortened time. We will do 2 days in London and they want to do 3 days in the countryside. The dilemma is how to give them a countryside/village experience in that short of time. I thought about taking them to Windsor since it's close. We will have a car. Are there villages or small towns (perhaps manor houses) close to Windsor that would be good...or other suggestions? I want to limit the time in the car for that short of time. Not sure what's possible? Thanks.

I would suggest taking the train from Paddington Station to Moreton-in-Marsh (2hr trip) in the Cotswolds. You can pick up a rental car in Bourton-on-the-Water, there are so many beautiful quaint villages in the Cotswolds. You could have a wonderful three days in the Cotswolds. You can PM me if you want info regarding places to rent a car from. I know you mentioned that you would have a car...but you didn't mention where you plan on getting it....that's why I suggested getting it in the Cotswolds once you get there.

As you have a car its an easy 90-100 minute drive to Bourton-on-the-Water with which I concur. You are then easily just a few minutes then from Bibury which is fantastic for its almshouses and all up and down around there. Have you considered Waddesdon Manor, the former and current home of the Rothscholds family and the surrounding area of the Chilterns?

No, I hadn't considered these suggestions - thank you. I had just started thinking about taking the ring road from Heathrow to Leeds Castle and Hever. Do you think this would be a possibility? I will take a look at Bourton and Waddeston. Thanks.

Not many Americans do it, but an overnight trip into Kent can be enjoyable. Leeds castle is a great experience, but also see the authentic castles at Hever, and Bodiam (moated) and I also enjoyed the manor house of Ightam Mote. (all of these can be done on a day trip from London). Also the ancient cinque port at Rye and Sandwich. There are oast houses and wine as well
